May 2024 aurora borealis captured by Stefanie Precourt outside Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Earlier this month (from May 10-12), uncommonly strong ionospheric activity hit Earth. You might have seen this in the form of the Northern Lights (as did our colleague Stef Précourt, who took this image outside our Montreal headquarters). Moreover, if you’re a GPS user, you might also have noticed that your SBAS, Atlas, and RTK corrections were disrupted, yielding higher than normal accuracy levels. If you performed data collection between May 10-12, we recommend checking your GNSS metadata to make sure your accuracy fell within your project requirements. While such storms are uncommon, it’s best to stay aware of major solar storms like this one when performing data collection.

To learn more about how strong solar storms may impact GNSS accuracy, we recommend reading this article by Jesse Khalil in GPS World.

To dive deeper into how the ionosphere introduces error to GNSS, we recommend this article: “GPS Overview Part 2: What Creates GNSS Positioning Error?
