Ontario Ph.D. Student Researches the Impact of Urban Runoff on Lake Ontario with Help from GNSS
Western University Ph.D. student Junwei Zhu is uncovering how road salt silently seeps into Lake Ontario via slow-moving groundwater. His shoreline surveys combine electromagnetic conductivity measurements and water sampling to trace salinity changes that occur beneath the surface. To precisely map these findings, Zhu relied on submeter GNSS technology, including the Arrow 100® and Skadi 100™ receivers, along with ArcGIS®. His goal is that someday his work could improve the way municipalities manage winter salting practices, to protect freshwater ecosystems for the long term.
